Business women fires straight shot Date: 28th February 2013
Ferny Hills -based, Telstra Award nominee businesswomen, Liane Barker, doesn’t present a false façade when talking of her success in the hope of inspiring others.
Marking International Women’s Day, (March 8) the graphic designer and single mother to a 15-year-old daughter, accepts her flaws and has decided she is enough.
“While I feel validated for being nominated, I’m not perfect and that is ok. I’ve struggled with adversity, we all have. It doesn’t make me different or special - just stubborn,” Ms Barker said.
“It’s easy to feel like you are the only one behind in your tax, drowning in parenting and financial responsibilities and berating yourself for not following your diary.
“I’ve had my melt downs and collapsed on the floor in a pool of snot and tears.”
While stories abound of sisters doing it for themselves she wants to tell it like it is.
“I am human and sometimes we all feel this way but some, especially women, build unrealistic expectations by presenting the perfect image. This doesn’t help anybody.”
Her career began as an apprentice in the male dominated signwriting industry, in the days when all you needed was a ute, trestles and some pots of paint.
As one of only a few women in the industry she won the highest honour for top apprentice in Queensland. Moving with the times, she mastered technology and morphed her skills with a degree in creative arts choosing a career in the graphic design industry.
Creating her current business in Toowoomba 15 years ago, she built a successful branding business, Inspired Business Design, and an online kids labelling company, Label-It Yours servicing national and international clients.
Through her experiences she discovered other talents and passions and recently turned her hand to writing fantasy fiction novels, being offered a publishing deal for the first of a trilogy and has taken to the stage as an inspirational speaker. In her spare time she volunteers her curatorial/arts experience to assist senior art students in their art exhibitions program.
“I’m passionate about helping women to realise their potential and follow their dreams by setting realistic goals and believing in themselves.”
